VISUAL ARTS

IN SEARCH OF ROTHKO

The human urge of expressing through writing and drawing on walls has been dated to cave paintings estimated around 45.000 years ago. Now you have to have special permission to do murals or it is considered vandalism. In this series, I compare the abstract expressionism of artists like Rothko to the result of covering up graffiti and other forms of expression in public places. Doors, columns, bridges, fences, and walls are now canvases for interventions done as a 3-way collaboration, where the graffiti author interferes with the blank canvas a second person tries to block it, and a third person, me, associates them with the artist’s style, the abstract expressionism of artists like Mark Rothko, Hans Hofmann,   Motherwell or Tapies.
